I think it is a combination of many factors, the largest being that the world governments simply don't know enough about them to disclose much of anything. Anything they disclose will only open the door for many, many more questions... questions they don't have the answers to. Also, I think our governments have acted with hostility (or, at the very least, xenophobia) toward them when they have tried to visit us. Their level of technology would have to be so advanced, I just don't see how they could travel from distant stars only to crash in Roswell,NM (right near an air force base, at that.) It is much more likely that our governments have intercepted and brought down a few of these craft in some clever manner that the aliens didn't anticipate.
I believe we've been less than diplomatic with them what times they have appeared, due to strict military and safety regulations on air space. We've chased them around with fighter jets, shot at them, etc. I think the governments don't want to admit that they've potentially offended these obviously technologically superior beings. To admit this would undermine their authority and only bring attention to the fact that they've botched every attempt at first contact. Of course, this pretty much sidesteps entirely the question of how personal choices filter into the effectiveness and perceived integrity of one's activism. Imagine if an environmental activist drove a Hummer and in response to criticism exclaimed "I advocate with my words, not with my car" and then spent the rest of the response explaining how they try to be as environmentally friendly as possible while driving their Hummer.

I made a throwaway account because the world of roller derby is very small and very transphilic. I know of people who got kicked out of their leagues for being perceived as transphobic and I fear that could happen to me.
I chose roller derby because it was one of the few real women's sports. By women for women. A sisterhood. A place to be myself. The last few years the trans movement has been felt so much and men are rising through the teams much faster than women in women's teams - partly because they are so strong and partly because there is this fear of being transphobic if this trans skater doesn't make the team.
This past weekend was the roller derby championship tournament, the highest of levels one could play WOMENS flat track roller derby. 12 teams competed including mine and this year there were more trans players than ever and I came home feeling just so sad for women everywhere.
Only 160ish "women" get to compete at this event/at this level, how can it be ok for (at least) 5 of those to be men? As a player I don't enjoy playing against them, these are 6plus feet tall men, with the muscle mass of men, the strength of men, the brutal force of men. When one of them collides full force into my 120 pound frame, there is significantly more damage than when a woman does. I chose to play with and against women, not men. But even if they weren't stronger or bigger or heavier... why can't they leave one little space for women to play sports with other women?

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I was only able to see the madness of the movement when it was my twat on the chopping block. I had previously ignored and avoided anyone deemed a TERF and just accepted that they were awful people. I had to in order to a good libfem foot soldier. Everyone knows you aren't allowed to READ what these women write or HEAR what these women say, even if it's nothing to do with trans issues at all. The DDR had much greater problems after the war than West Germany. For starters most of the war reparations to Russia were paid by the DDR. The allies cancelled reparations pretty quickly after the war which was a massive fuck you to Russia as the total damage during WW2 to Russia was estimated at more than $100 billion dollars. Much heavy industry was stripped down and transported to Russia.
The fighting was also much more severe in the DDR. There was far greater reconstruction that had to take place to begin with as the east of the country was historically underdeveloped compared to west Germany.
These factors meant that the DDR couldn't compete with west Germany in areas such as wages and consumer goods. The wall was built and border controls strengthened because huge amounts of working age people were leaving the DDR for a "better life". The DDR had given them free education and then they were simply leaving and it was having a major effect on their ability to develop.
There were also much more practical reasons for closing the border. The Germany was the centre of the cold war. Why would you let spies and saboteurs into the country. (There was evidence of sabotage to key infrastructure).
I think the Berlin Wall was justifiable considering the context of the situation at the time. The DDR was not he'll on earth the country offered affordable living, good education and had very high living standards in general. It just couldn't compete with West Germany because of the multiple issues that the country faced.
