“ ne is known for his compassion for struggling students, but he is not a gifted teacher, and as a result his students do poorly in school.”
So… ALL his students are struggling?
“The other is known as lacking in compassion, but he is a gifted teacher, and as a result his students do well in school.”
He has no struggling students. Then he needs no compassion. You didn’t really think this thought experiment through, did you?
" One is known for his compassionate bedside manners, but he is not a gifted doctor, and as a result his patients suffer. The other lacks bedside manners, but is regarded as a gifted doctor, and as a result his patients thrive.”
In my experience, the general practitioner needs compassion, and he can refer patients to the technically competent. The surgeons don’t really need a bedside manner. Lord knows th eguy who took out my gall bladder had none. First thing he said post-surgery was ‘Your bladder was NASTY! Dead black tissue. You’d have DIED in a week!’ But he did get me past that incident.
"Ideally, we would all like to be served by compassionate and competent teachers and doctors,”
Depends on what we’re learning. If it’s math, i want competent and ‘compassionate’ can go fly a kite. Half my instructors in the Navy lacked compassion but were still ideal of the topics they taught.
Knew a few that were GREAT guys to hang out with, but fucking moist farts on the platform.
"who would really choose the compassionate yet incompetent teacher or doctor over their insensitive yet competent counterparts?”
I can see all four of them being ideal in certain situations.
“No one doubts that Pope Francis showed great compassion for the poor. Indeed, that is one of the most heralded aspects of his legacy. But his harsh criticisms of capitalism,”
Captalism is WHY we have as many poor as we do. I don’t think you can BE compassionate to the poor AND promote capitalism that we have, where Nestle questions whether or not anyone really has a RIGHT to clean water.
"and his affinity for socialism,”
Which would at least alleviate poverty.
“must be taken into account.”
Except by Americans, who think the Poor are being punished by God and socialism is a synonym for Satan.
“It is undeniably true that capitalism has done more to induce upward social mobility and alleviate poverty than any economic system in history.”
I deny that.
Capitalists say things like ’there’s no problem with us being a nation of renters.’ As long as he gets to own the property.
Capitalism has made the middle class smaller every year, making the jump from povery to ‘upward mobility’ less and less possible each time.
"It is also undeniably true that socialism has proven to be the greatest generator of poverty in the world.”
Excpet for the countries where socialism has worked, but that would be a fact, not propaganda.
