Look, I’ll be the first person to admit that democracy is not nearly perfect; it assumes that all voters have a reasonable amount of intelligence and common sense, and that that the majority is capable of not voting against their own interests. Humans are flawed, thus democracy is by definition flawed. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the USA with MAGA being voted into absolute power.
HOWEVER, democracy is still, without much doubt, the BEST system we have. In a dictatorship, one mistake in who is in charge could cost everybody for a generation at best. In democracy, several mistakes by who is in charge can still be fixed quickly. A government that does not fear the people cannot have the people’s best interest at heart.
So I’d still much rather live in democratic Europe than in friggin’ Russia or North Korea; nations that are completely going to shit in every aspect because the dictators in charge have gone utterly insane and nobody can counteract them anymore. Would I (for an outragous example) want Belgium to (via democratic elections) be turned into an Islamic Theocracy thanks to voting immigrants? Of course not. But that’s why I expect people to be smart enough not to vote against our constitution… Granted, it’s a tall order of me, but it’s still better than just turning our free country into a fascist autocracy instead…
You want a democracy to WORK? Then take your responsibility as a citizen and do your own part (such as not being an uninformed racist moron) rather than surrendering all free will to a despot.
