Actually, the problem has been all those historians who REFUSE to acknowledge homosexual activities and insist that ‘history’ records THEY WERE JUST GOOD FRIENDS, ALRIGHT!?!?!

Also of note, there’s certainly rampant speculation of the sexuality and/or gender identity of GNC (Gender Non-Comforming) people in history; though we probably shouldn’t let that go above the level of “for fun” if the evidence is too limited to make any real judgment. Modern terms and concepts around those things mostly didn’t exist, and we have no idea how they’d describe themselves if they existed today. That means that some people’s true selves will be erased forever, but misidentifying GNC cishets isn’t much better.

That being said, there are still lots of examples where writing off GNC people as “we just don’t know, so let’s assume cishet by default” is an exercise in willful blindness and stupidity. The rare mistakes are probably worth at least getting some historical representation.

In most cases, we will never know about the sexual or gender identity of a historical figure, and that's fine. And it's not an accusation, it's speculation.
