Nope. “Honest work” is typically defined as ‘helpful, socially useful work.’ Building a road, a bridge, or a church is socially useful. Most slave labor was done for profit. Someone ELSE’S profit. The slaves didn’t get a piece of it.

Again, that’s a nope. There was always the option of renegotiating the relationship. Staying on the land, paying rent to the landowner, getting shares of the profits. Some places did that. The greater number, however, didn’t let the screen door hit them.

That there was y’all’s fault. You could have welcomed the new citizens as citizens or you could be pissed that they got privileges while you lost some, and still treat them like shit. What did you pick?

If you’re not ‘enemy’ to the black population, you could just offer decent jobs with decent pay. Probably get quite a few takers. But you’re asking them to return to being less than 2nd class citizens, giving up most freedoms, and living in your fantasy life.
