Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah ripped into the White House on Wednesday for considering widespread student loan forgiveness. He argued it could amount to a slippery slope for other types of debt forgiveness.

"Desperate polls call for desperate measures: Dems consider forgiving trillions in student loans" the Utah Republican wrote on Twitter. "Other bribe suggestions: Forgive auto loans? Forgive credit card debt? Forgive mortgages? And put a wealth tax on the super-rich to pay for it all. What could possibly go wrong?"

Do you want a workforce that can compete globally? A middle class to envy instead of a stark divide between have and have-not that employment does nothing to alleviate?

Or do you just want to scribble a smiley face on the kind of “bonded labourer” bullshit that you pretend you can wash your hands of when it happens in some faraway country full of brown people?

He thinks there's a slippery slope between forgiving government issued debts and debts from private lenders? And he speaks as if taxing the super rich is a bad thing. Why the fuck shouldn't they pay (more?) taxes? The tax burden falls squarely on the middle class because the super rich won't pay their share.

What? Do Republican voters think by voting against their best interests they'll win brownie points with a class that barely recognizes their existence except for as cheap labour?

If Romney is afraid of a slippery slope, he should be afraid of the one that will lead to a class conflict.

Not all debts are the same, Mittens.

Student loans are generally larger and have several problems with them. I’m ok with forgiving them as long as we also fix the root problems as well.

In a sense he's not wrong but really isn't that what campaign promises are? Bribes in exchange for votes?

You aren’t required to own a car to get a job. Yes, I know in some places the jobs are far away from residential areas. But they generally don’t say in the job requirements “you have to have a car.”

The same with a mortgage on a house.

You what a lot of jobs do require though? A college education. I think it’s garbage that people are forced to pay exorbitant amounts of money to get in on the entry level. Also, this debt is absolutely crushing a lot of people in this country.

Maybe then it would happen a LOT less, if ever, that anyone from the middle class finds that with the latest rent increase they can’t afford the rent on their house/apartment anymore and go from tenants to vehicular homeless. If not vehicle-less living-on-the-street homeless.

And as that amount is quite a chunk o'change, the only way to recover that debt was to put so many Staples employees - especially in Britain - in debt by closing so many branches.
