To me, it seems much more likely that the cognitive dissonance between his extreme misogyny and anti-carnality and his natural desires as a heterosexual man drove him insane and twisted his desires, causing him to seek out perverse material, especially material sexually sadistic to women, so that he can find release (whether in the form of actual masturbation, transformed into cathartic anger, or both) and validation in his hatred of women and sexuality - I even would not be surprised if he is only able to come down (if only relatively) by fully surrendering to his guilt.
