This actually sounds a bit like an idea I have in one of my worldbuilding projects - namely, the implication that the males of one species actually originated as a “cuckoo” species that hijacked another species to reproduce themselves.

You know the difference here, though? The “cuckoo” species replaced the males of their host species. Even I’m not out there enough to imply the male gender itself works that way.

This actually does line up with evolutionary theory - females evolve factors that allow them to more selectively control which males they mate with, while males evolve factors to defeat female selective processes. It’s why female ducks have corkscrew vaginas and male ducks have “explosive” erections.

Of course, the key word there is “selectively control”. The females don’t reject males outright, just ones they don’t consider fit for breeding.

A lot of people point to it being something of a cultural hangover. Up to the ’60s or so, men were portrayed as Father Knows Best types while women were the silly emotional ones.
