Even with their rightward tendencies (part LDP, part almost a net millennium of stratocratic rule, I’m guessing), Japan’s populace is not some philosophical monolith.

Putting aside that said pop-culture creators in Japan can be rather critical of their nation/culture, behavior in early Showa included. Exhibit A: The Patriots AIs in Metal Gear Solid 2 were at least in part inspired by Kojima Hideo’s frustration with the uyoku constantly compelling history textbooks to ignore or just gloss over Japan’s 1930s and 1940s atrocities in Korea, China, etc.

So at least there are native Japanese who want their nation to own up to its misdeeds and apologize. The trick is them making sure they’re taken seriously.
