criticize music such as heavy metal, rock and roll, and country for being "sexist".
It often is.
First, I’ll acknowledge the truth of this.
But, I’d also like to add that probably more often they aren’t sexist, fairly often pretty anti-sexist, and on some occasions sexist from the other point of view. One of my favorite examples of the last is “Menocide” by Otep, but even she was just going a little extreme for the music, with some pretty valid reasons for the anger in her personal history, and she does not actually want to kill men.
I’d also like to add that most of the time when music is being criticized for sexism, it is specific songs being criticized, and while plenty on the edge of sexism are more fun romps than anything, yeah, there’s some pretty horrible stuff out there. Hence, the acknowledgement that your statement is true.
But I should also mention Twisted Sister having been called out for a misogynistic song about sado-masochism, Under the Blade, which was actually written about one of the band members getting surgery. So, yeah, some people read stuff there that isn’t really there, especially when you freak out about a song that has a woman masturbating.
