I'm absolutely glad that my biological mother lost custody and that me and my siblings got raised by parents who really, actually cared.

It would have been better if the parents who raised us were gay and secular vs the ones who got us, who were straight and religious; maybe then it wouldn't have been so hard recognizing that I myself am gay. Maybe my brother wouldn't have been beaten for liking pornography (for being a teenager IOW). Maybe I wouldn't have alienated my sister for her relationship with her now-husband. Fucking hell... how many times must it be said, the validity of consent is a function of symmetry of information. THAT is why kids can't consent to sex with adults: there is no way to adequately 'inform' them with the years of experience in social situations and the impacts of having sex.

Most of the relevant understanding of the personal, social, and cultural impacts of sex are fairly well understood by the age of 18, and there's not much more to tell; that said, I would feel skeezy doing things with someone younger than about 27, for those same reasons.

So, I have to say, there's an issue I take with the way our society runs in that our ages are not our own business. There are only a few contexts where it is necessary to ask or know physical age. For the most part these are when someone is not yet the "age of majority", and in medical settings.

It doesn't matter for anyone else, or shouldn't. Anything else is age discrimination.

The fact that we tie benefits to old age is, honestly, still discriminatory. We should be offering medical care and security to everyone regardless of age. And the way retirement is structures is kind of bullshit too: why can't someone decide to start taking retirement checks *whenever* so long as they are willing to start paying taxes on the money as they take it out, as a function of their total income?

It's all just bullshit. We shouldn't have our birth years on our IDs or even our birthdays, unless we are under the age of majority. We should instead be evaluated on the basis of who we are, and how we are, and what we know, not on how many years it took us to get to where we are now.
