“This story also raises the possibility that the Village People song "In the Navy" - which, rather disgustingly, is also taken as a gay anthem;”
Aw, diddums not wanna enjoy a song about Submarines? Long, hard, and full of seamen?
Except it’s disco.
Studied disco much?
The reason country artists really really REALLY hated and beat up disco-goers was because so very, very many of the performing artists were gay. The whole format was a platform for homosexuals to express themselves, in music, lyrics, and dress. And the Manly Men of the 70’s and 80’s would not stand for such nonsense. Especially when they felt that the music itself was ‘gay.’
"you know, all those sweaty men together on a ship,”
I was on five ships over twenty years. Service members are CONSTANTLY calling each other faggots. Especially when four or more of them take a communal shower. Some of them always struck me as protesting WAY too much.
“ho ho ho - is simply the patriotic song that the lyrics suggest it to be,”
You are sounding so desperate. You really need to have been right all those years you enjoyed the song, huh?
“without a hidden meaning.”
He said, right before identifying a hidden meaning. *Snicker*
"Maybe even about urging black men to join the Navy (or any other branch of the military)”
Now that’s projecting.
No, they were not promoting other service branches by listing oceanography multiple times.
Or submarines.
“as a way of getting out of the ghetto and improving their lives.”
So, we’re also a teensy bit racist?
“The Woke Pig, now in retreat, has spread far and wide many interpretations of popular art that attempt to reduce the beauty and meaningfulness of many rock and soul songs - even those that evoke the divine - to their petty little Woke agenda.”
You think ‘Born In The USA’ is a patriotic song, don’t you? And I bet you think Hallelujah is about God, not some jewish kid getting laid?
You either need to wake up or stay off the internet forever.
“For example, Pete Townshend of The Who in the early 1980s released a number of solo songs, including "A Little Is Enough" and "The Sea Refuses No River", wherein the lyrics are to me pretty clearly the words of a sinner seeking redemption from the Lord.”
Some other god-botherer heard Rhianna’s lyrics, “I’m a question, and you’re of course the answer” and thought she said, ’I’m a Christain, and you’re of rouce the Answer.’ I think you’re projecting even harder, here.
“When the Woke Pig can't twist the meaning of a song, as with Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky",”
Hehe. Greenbaum’s Jewish. He saw a gospel song on TV and said to himself, ‘Yeah, I can do that.’ and, with no experience in gospel music, wrote a gold record. You fell for a fake, idiot.
“Actually, of course, it's the other way around: the Lord God put one over on Greenbaum by using him to throw a little God onto the pop charts; Greenbaum's intent mattering not at all.”
It matters. You’re insisting you know the ‘meaning behind’ In The Navy, but you can’t take GREENBAUM’S OWN TESTIMONY about the meaning behind the song. You simply HAVE to find God in it, for no reason at all but your original bias.
“It's time to reclaim the popular arts. Forget everything you think you know about the meaning of song lyrics.”
So…. Goddidit. Just stamp that on every record you like. You’re planting your flag there willy-nilly, just to claim it’s your propaganda.
Lying for Jesus is still lying, jackass.
