I told some white liberal women in my class that. I said "it's in predominately Western countries in the West where women can vote and have rights. These are non-existent in the other parts of the world."
Just like Bastethotep said, these are very recent developments. Also, I get an icky “bow down to the nice benevolent white men who so kindly chose to “give” you those rights” vibe.
We know what happens to women in “non-western” countries. We were in that same position not too long ago. No one “gave” us these rights, we should have been born into them and we had to fight hard to get them and are still fighting to get them for others and to maintain them for ourselves.
