I’ve only met a hand full of people in Asatru myself. Most have actually been pretty decent, but even the decent ones would flat out tell you that white supremacy had growing prevalence in the faith. Probably because some neo-Nazis find the idea of a European folk religion attractive, because that makes it “whites-only” by default.
And what practically no one understands about a folk religion, is that while none of them are actively seeking converts, they all have large contingents willing to teach anyone who asks, and even let anyone serious about their understanding join in. The more serious you are, the further you can come into their faith. And even if you’re not going to join them so deeply, they’ll often build community with “outsiders” on entirely different grounds, and don’t bother anyone else about their own religious convictions, as long as others don’t bother them.
As far as Jews, yeah, some take the “Chosen People” thing far too seriously, but that’s primarily Hasidic Jews. The vast majority of the rest, they tend to hold God and their faith in a half-serious half-irreverent view that frankly I wish a lot more people would view their own faith and beliefs. It tends to lead them to requestion their values often, and while often finding the same answer, much more easily find that they’d missed some point before and now they can actually hold a stronger view.
All of this is completely unlike the way Gregory Hood complains that no one will simply roll over and serve his every whim.
