Just so everyone can remember this little consideration … Ellis Island was an immigration way station at a time when most immigrants allowed into the United States were northern Europeans, with exceptions finally being made for southern Europeans and Russians. Not a whole lot of others were coming, or would have been allowed.
And in case anyone does ask about the Chinese, also remember most of them came into territories in the west, not yet states at the time.
