“Trans Identified Men/Males” is their term for trans women. They’re trying to make fun of the idea that trans women are women by implying that they can get pregnant despite “not having a vagina”, because if they were “really women” they would be able to get pregnant. They’re trying to parody a strawman idea which no one actually holds and not even doing it right.

Well, if you were a well-off and lived in certain countries in Western Europe circa the 1920s, then you could semi-openly live as gay or lesbian. It still wasn’t entirely safe, but you could. Likewise if you were a member of the aristocracy in certain eras in certain parts of the world, you could get away with it if you weren’t obnoxious about it. You’d still pay a bit of a social penalty, but you weren’t in significant danger of losing your power (or your life) over it. There did exist some stone age cultures which were tolerant of it, but they made up only a very tiny part of the global population. Beyond those narrow circumstances? Not in the slightest, and it’s disingenuous to equate those experiences with those of the vast majority.

There were some idiots in the news recently who loudly insisted that the sun and the moon were in the wrong place in the sky, because they didn’t take the Earth’s axial tilt into account. This is somehow weirder. Even if this is entirely a figment of their imagination, the concept of energy bands is artificial; outside of the human perception of color they exist mostly because of technological limits. We can conceptually divide them up any way we wish, what matters is how useful those divisions are. If there were absolute, discrete bands and those somehow changed, I can’t imagine how that would affect biology, unless it was extreme enough that it also screwed up how color works, and we would see that.

One thing which really confuses the issue is that the boy actually was “transsexual”, at least according to the medical definition which existed at the time: someone who had their physical sex surgically altered. Gender dysphoria or gender incongruency didn’t factor into that. John Money was attempting to muddy the waters by equivocating “transsexual” (the now-obsolete medical term) with “transsexual” (LGBT+ sociopolitical term for what is now called transgender). It’s easy to fall for that trap if you really want to fall for it, despite it requiring a bit more mental gymnastics than it used to.

What’s scary about their thought process when it comes to these “jokes” is when they claim that inanimate objects (“my gun identifies as a wireless peacekeeping device”) or abstract concepts have a personal identity which can be expressed. They’re basically putting humans on the same moral level as things which aren’t alive or don’t physically exist.

I’m sure that some of them will try to hide it behind the veil of “Lolrandom absurdist humor”, but even if they’re being honest (press X to doubt) the fact that they’re taking a joke meant to dehumanize certain people to an extreme which effectively dehumanizes everyone doesn’t get them a pass in a political environment which is heading in the direction of the only entities having “real” rights being fetuses, corpses, guns, churches, and corporations.

The ruler didn’t actually have a specific title, though in some eras, they were considered to be a minor god. The idea that it meant “king” is a misunderstanding passed to us through us through the Greeks.

Regardless, even [mis]used as a title for the ruler, it’s a gender-nonspecific one, like “monarch” or “sovereign”. The confusion here is due to most “Pharaohs” being men, and most languages having different names for male and female rulers, so it seems like the female counterpart is missing. Again, not how the word was actually used by its culture of origin.

Something you don’t understand: Sex isn’t just involved in pregnancy. In most social animals, humans included, sex also plays a major part in social interactions and relationships. (Insert usual caveats about sex-repulsed aces.)

The fact that unlike other social animals, humans can make both connections (well, at least some humans, anyway) puts a great deal of tension between both of those things. That tension is removed when you decouple sex from pregnancy, at least until the people involved choose otherwise, which is why we have contraception and abortion in the first place.

Or maybe you do understand, and you subscribe to old-timey morality where suffering is good and enjoying life is evil, because you’re either a masochist or a hypocrite.

I will say that rape trials are often kind of fucked-up. Not only are the laws sometimes decades behind the times, but you’re likely to get removed from the jury pool if you don’t believe harmful myths around rape. That’s not even getting into how in many places there are a lot of barriers against justice which are encountered even before the trial.

Buuuut… I very strongly suspect that in order to meet a good-enough standard of his “evidence-based laws”, we’d have to run thousands of experiments where people were *actually* raped, and then have some fairly objective means of determining long-term trauma which don’t rely on personal testimony (while somehow keeping the victims from knowing that the whole thing is an experiment, to avoid confounding factors - after all, knowing that there’s some powerful organization out there doing such a thing could be traumatizing in itself). And then he’d just reject the answer anyway because he’s incredulous at the idea that rape is harmful, especially when it’s female-on-male.

You know, if they were slightly more *and* slightly less insane in the right ways, and actually meant exactly what they said, then we could go ahead and ban the specific things which they say they’re against, despite that no one is actually doing them. We’d end up with half a zillion laws which are about as meaningful as forbidding people from spray-painting graffiti on whales, but at least they’d stop being ridiculous for awhile.

But no. In the real world, giving them what they really want means overly broad laws which screw over everyone, often in unintended ways, except that they scream like a stuck pig and then demand blood if it ever affects one of them or someone they look up to. And that’s when it’s not overly vague laws which are hard to enforce but nevertheless have a chilling effect on free speech, usually done in the name of free speech. So sadly, that’s not a solution.

The above description doesn’t sound anything like modernism to me, but people have strange ideas about things sometimes. It also sounds kind of like conservative misunderstandings of postmodernism, which is a very different thing, but I’m not sure it’s meant to be that either. I kind of suspect that he’s talking about current pop-culture trends, which is not at all what “modernism” means, but it’s hard to tell from the OP alone.

Here’s what bullying generally accomplishes: After years of recovering from a life broken by bullying, the victim becomes… more resistant to bullying. Which comes at a high long-term cost, and is something they would probably not actually need if people cracked down on bullies a lot more. Meanwhile, from the perspective of a perpetrator who is genuinely deluding themselves into thinking it’s for the victim’s “own good” (assuming they see the eventual outcome, which they probably won’t), it’s a crapshoot whether the long-term effects are “better” or “worse” and whether their actions had anything to do with that, either way. That’s not even getting into how bullies sometimes harm themselves, usually in subtle ways, by those actions, but rarely have the self-awareness to understand how and why.

That’s all assuming that things don’t go sideways in a very bad way.

Since Abortion started in the 70s the cherishing of any human life has been steadily devalued.

Life has always been treated as if it were cheap… unless you were one of the “highborn”, whatever that meant at any particular time and place (most often the nobility). Post WWII, the White Middle class was treated as being among the highborn, but since then there’s been very gradual decay in the inherent value of the white middle class but very gradual increase along nearly everyone else.

You can speculate the reasons behind that all you want, but you’d need pretty strong evidence that abortion rights had anything to do with that, given that it doesn’t seem to have happened in Western Europe, where abortion rights are still strong.

There is evidence that laws and (formal) religion evolved together. Similar social pressures were involved, due to needing clear rules in order to function as a large-scale society. Both involved writing, which in most times and places only a limited number of people knew how to do, thus there was a lot of crossover between religion and government. Both reflected the moral values of the people at the time that they were written, at least to some extent (people could be manipulated or pressured into following things which most didn’t really believe in, but only to a point). It’s a chicken-and-egg issue as to which came first, and might have different answers in different parts of the world.

In modern times you can have one without the other, and most nations try to minimize the crossover between the two.

Also, not only does religion not necessarily prevent slavery, it can and has made slavery far easier.

I’m always weirded out by people who frame human relationships in market and economy language. Yes, there’s some degree of exchange going on, but other people aren’t commodities or fungible goods! They’re not investments which exist only for future payoff! It’s also weird when the people in the conversation are both product and customer, as if they just somehow pick each other off the shelves. This is also usually the kind of person who refers to the relationship itself as “relationship maintenance” (as if having a life together was some kind of unpleasant chore).

I’ve tried pointing out that antiques exist, but that just goes into weird places like “antiques aren’t *actually* valuable and here’s why (cue lack of understanding of economic value)” or “antiques are niche interests not relevant to the conversation” or even “women age like milk, they can’t be compared to antiques”.

I don’t think they understand what those words mean. “Autonomy” means that one has the right to self-determination. “Body Autonomy” means the right to determine what happens to your own body (usually used in the context of health care, but also social, sexual, and employment situations). Fetuses don’t have rights, and don’t have the capacity to determine anything. Hell, even toddlers aren’t treated as having much capacity for determination unless you’re one of those people who let their kids run feral.

This isn’t even a case of aping left-wing political terminology without an in-depth understanding of the issues behind them, it’s a case of not even understanding regular language.

I’m guessing that they mean the right to inviolability, which is a different conversation from the one they probably think they’re having.

Huh. Turns out there’s something called the “LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus”. There are two smaller subsets referred to as “task forces”, one specifically dedicated to Trans issues and another specifically dedicated to LGBTQIA+ Elder issues.

Their website doesn’t list the full membership of the task forces for some reason, just the co-chairs, but it does list the full membership of the Caucus, and there are a lot of familiar names on there, including my own representative. I don’t know if they actually accomplish anything useful, but it’s nice to know they exist, at least.

You know, this made me curious about whether dying from anaphylactic shock (particularly from an allergic reaction) counts as a “natural death”. It turns out that the answer is “it depends”. Sometimes it counts as a natural death for legal and/or statistical purposes, sometimes it counts as an accidental death, and sometimes “other”, sometimes it depends on the exact circumstances. And for legal purposes sometimes it counts as a homicide instead of or in addition to one of the other things (in at least some cases where it was induced by another person, whether purposeful or not). So there’s no universal agreement here.

You know, I’m tempted to troll these people. Pretend to support their views, but then segue into the things that the worst incels want which also happen to be fully compatible with their views… and end with “And the age of Satan begins!” It probably wouldn’t work unless I was a man or was pretending to be one online though, and even then unless they were very familiar with incels or it was part of a large-scale trolling campaign I’d just get dismissed as a random kook.
