@The_Dybbuk, the Versailles Treaty and it’s problems have been known to many historians from, well, the beginning of the Versailles Treaty, but unfortunately the least 3 or 4 generations have been taught crap about how basically Hitler’s rise to power came in some kind of vacuum because basically the Germans were easily led by a man who claimed he could make them all rich. They always forget what he really said in those beer halls across Germany is that the Versailles Treaty made it illegal for German companies to do the things they had to do to get the country out of the hole it was in, and rescinding that treaty would be his first act as Chancellor. He did keep that promise, and it did do a lot of good. The rest of it … that was because Hitler was a hair away from being a psycho, and he was about the most sane of the Nazi leadership.

And the actual sane ones underestimated the insanity of their rivals and the power it gave them, because they wouldn’t hesitate to do the most insane power grabs ever, that prevented this mad bunch from being removed from power without breaking absolutely every gain that was ever made. We’re just lucky that particular group of politicians in 1945 understood the failures of the previous group, and didn’t do the same thing all over again.

I’ve only very rarely heard of any hesitation to condemn a woman for stabbing her partner to death. It usually follows finding out her partner really did need a stabbing. I’ve never once heard of cops seeking excuses or explanations for a woman killed her kids, except insofar as making sure they have a solid case to lock her up for life.

And if anyone says Susan Smith, she received some hesitation when there was a chance her kids really were kidnapped. And oh, the police were looking into her several days before they spoke out about investigating her, in fact within hours of the report, because it became quickly apparent her story did not add up.

Unfortunately, there are always assholes besides police who do look for excuses and explanations for everything to support the idea that no one commits an evil act unless the Devil is involved, all the while talking about how naturally evil people are without God. And as we’ve seen with Hephzibah House posts, denying anyone associating themselves with God are capable of anything even as evil as jaywalking.

These are the kind of people who like to talk about how Blazing Saddles would never be made today because of the politically correct environment. They always forget, Mel Brooks picked on everybody. They also forget his picking was not hateful, and never tried to make anyone look evil for vast reasons that make no sense beyond conspiracy theory nutjobbery. Blazing Saddles did not attack white people, though it made fun of them. It also made fun of black people, and Chinese and Mexicans as well. Those last not as much as others, but they got a bit of ribbing.

Even the supposed attacks against white supremacists is just painting them as exactly what they are, people who want to keep down non-white so there’s more available for whites … which coincidentally, as white supremacists, they happen to be! The worst part about white supremacy, or any other form of supremacy, isn’t their attacks on others for reasons of skin color, religious belief, sexual orientation, or whatever, but it is in fact that they treat peace and prosperity themselves as zero-sum, and that one cannot have these unless another is deprived. Never having the thought in their heads that we have what he have today only because throughout history there have been several who realized it is not in fact zero-sum, and have worked to grow human strength so more people can be at peace and have prosperity. And also, the strongest empires throughout history have been founded and carried into great strength by those who realized this and tried to benefit those around them, and have all been destroyed by zero-sum theorists who destroy the empire simply so they can be on top of the rubble.

And don’t everyone forget, WWII soldiers in Korea wouldn’t be trading in their M16s for BB guns. They’d be trading in their M1s. (Either in WWII, or the Korean Conflict.) The M-16 wasn’t introduced until 1964, more than a decade after either action. So it’s not only a geopolitical history fail, it’s a technology history fail as well.

Note: I did have to look up the exact year the M16 entered service, but I did know already it was beginning to see release early in the US involvement in Vietnam, which was the 1960s, well after WWII or Korean Conflict.

Also note: Davey, if he reads this, will tell us that’s completely irrelevant to his point, while completely ignoring that his ignorance about this is only one in a long line of his ignorance about everything.

Do you mean considering what the actual consequences of particular discoveries and technologies would actually be, creating a more fully realized world, rather than a simplistic elementary school “that’s so cool” scenario presented by kids who haven’t yet realized there’s always a cost?

Frankly, I find science fiction that considers how the culture is shaped by the technology after the technology has been developed far more compelling than one that creates a culture, or uses our own, and then adds lasers just to be cool. It’s certainly most often more fun than dinosaurs with with rocket launchers strapped to their backs, with a few silly exceptions such as the Alien Shooter games. Certainly there’s an important reason no has seriously attempted to novelize these games, and why the developer would probably laugh if someone asked to.

Interesting that there’s no mention that the definitions for autism have also been expanded since 50 years ago. It used to be the only people labelled autistic were almost completely uncommunicative, and often not even able to feed themselves. Then came an understanding that a lot of people had some of the same symptoms and signs as those with autism, but also had varying abilities to care for themselves, even some who had some severe communication issues but no problem with self-care.

The unfortunate thing is Chap Trap House might already have done significant damage. And the Democrat candidates trying to get the nomination now keep forgetting one important thing. Speaking of Republican demagogues, I couldn’t help but think of Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity reading this, though more significantly about Alex Jones and every other extreme right winger who is too extreme to actually get on TV, but still manages to get such a large audience. I makes me wonder just how many liberals do listen to something like TCH and find it perfectly in line with their own thinking, but also, how many will never know just how extreme they are, but rather just the stories told by people with their own agenda.

I’m feeling less hopeful that Trump is going to be out following this election, partly because the primary is not being used to determine the best candidate, only the most vicious, and while a fighting spirit is necessary, viciousness will only ever serve Trump because he knows how to leverage it, especially someone else’s.

No mention that those on medication for life have illnesses that really do prevent any quality of life, if not drastically shorten it without these drugs. For example, the heart medications prescribed to post heart attack patients. Whereas in the 1950s anyone who survived a heart attack would live the next three years at most on bed rest before dying, plenty can with therapy and drugs get back to highly active lifestyles for years. Epileptics can often stop having seizures, but in the mean time need anti-seizure medications for years. Diabetics need medications usually for life because the only way to reverse it is to lose weight, and sometimes you can’t lose enough, especially since diabetes makes weight loss significantly more difficult.

And let’s just ignore all the people who’ve died at home for easily treatable illnesses because they stayed home taking vitamin supplements. Especially children with severe flus, or measles or chickenpox, or some other crazily easily treatable, and often preventable, illnesses.

For those who don’t know, yes Finns were taken and sold as slaves. Mostly captured by Rus tribesmen, and Danish and Swedish vikings. Just like every single group in history has been targetted for slavery, quite often by another group they targetted for slavery. Not many were actually moved 1000s of kilometers to be sold, though occasionally one would “get” to travel, either to be added to a distant ruler’s harem for sex or just for show, or because they had some valuable skill that distant rulers were willing to pay a premium for. Most kept for labor (yes, primarily labor) were taken maybe 100 kilometers away, and sold another 200 or so at most away from there. Which, by the way, could easily be 200 kilometers in the opposite direction they were taken to the slave market, which puts them again within 100 kilometers of home.

Amazing how someone can be so right and still be entirely wrong.

Just so you know, that whole sequence isn’t as unlikely as you think. A moon can be red and blue at the same time! Blue moon just refers to two full moons in the same calendar month. Happens at least every few years. Now, have a lunar eclipse on the second full moon in that month, and it’s red blue moon. Not sure how often this happens, but I have found out some things with the moon are more common and regular than you might think. Particularly eclipses, which I found out because I was playing Aria of Sorrow around the same time that the last major solar eclipse happened. And found out the significance of Soma being born in the American midwest during said eclipse, especially given that Dracula’s castle disappeared in in Transylvania during the solar eclipse of 1999, and reappears during the eclipse of 2035. Reading up on all 3 of those eclipses was very interesting.

Note, if you do look it up, yes I know the game is fictional. It was just interesting to see that they’d used real astronomy for the whole thing.

This happens in many places, with petty crimes that happen all the time, and they don’t have the prison space to keep people locked up for 10+ years for shoplifting a candy bar. And the claim wasn’t that the criminal is a liberal, but it’s the liberals who arrested and released him.

If someone has been arrested and “released” 138 times, it probably was shoplifting small items, vandalism, or selling loose cigarettes, wherein he’s detained and fined by a magistrate. It gets people in and paying fines, then out as quick as possible, a very important goal in a city of over 8 million people where, again, a lot of petty crime is taking place.
