In these assholes’ minds, any parent should be able to do anything they want in order to “protect” their children from LGBTQIA+ people, masks, vaccines, or learning correct history. In fact, in their minds not protecting kids from these things and allowing kids to be vaccinated, wear masks, learn history that doesn’t glorify white people and shit on everyone else, or be exposed to or possibly be LGBT people is abuse.

And the ones chippy here is talking about are using intimidation and threats of violence (i.e. terrorism) to scare school boards and libraries into doing what the parents want. A lot of people who used to go by lesbian or gay (but were actually trans) are now officially coming out as trans since they feel safer. Some people who are cis and same sex attracted are viewing this as a betrayal and also a conspiracy to “confuse” people who are lesbian and gay into changing their gender so they will not longer be same sex attracted. They think it will destroy the lesbian and gay population. It’s basically more TERF bullshit about how trans people are ruining everything.

Speaking of flags on cars, etc… I tend to avoid letting the dogs I walk go in yards where there’s a flag visible. I’ve noticed that the homeowners tend to be angry - I’ve had some come out and ask what I’m doing in the neighborhood. I tell them I’m walking their neighbor’s dog but they still act weird, like they really think I’m casing the neighborhood. And I’ve seen tons of flags associated with right-wing politicians. Like the houses with flags were more likely to have Trump signs. And the ones on the cars also seem to come with a ton of bumper stickers that are hateful, like that stupid “Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve”. I’m sure they’re not all like that but for my own safety I avoid dealing with those houses and cars.

So I worked for a university for a while. One of my jobs was to assist faculty in recruiting grad students. This program I worked with was a top-tier neuroscience program. Whenever they came across applications for students of color, they wouldn’t even consider them, regardless of how good they were, because they thought the students wouldn’t want to live in a mostly white area and it would be a waste of time interviewing them and a waste of money to spend on airfare, hotels, etc, bringing them out to see the campus and meet faculty and current students. They never gave these students a chance to even say yes or no, they just rejected them outright. These were some really excellent students applying - even the faculty admitted it, but they never even gave them a chance. And no one in upper administration or among the deans or regents ever said anything. But we did have like 3 years in a row where we only admitted white men.
