Having actually bothered to read core Nazi doctrine, I found it absurd and internally inconsistent. The ravings of a hysterical loon more than anything else.
Nazism is nonsensical.
That said, while it may be true that many Nazis would have been at least a little upset if they knew what was really being done in the camps in occupied Poland, they cannot be said to have been wholly ignorant.
Most chose to look away, and to un-see. None dared to object.
Some rationalized the industrial mass murder as an unpleasant necessity, to build a better tomorrow.
Others simply wished it away by closing their eyes.
Most knew only the rumours they heard. But when they should have been asking why these rumours were circulating, they instead just dismissed it as gossip.
Very few were actually enthusiastic cheerleaders for it. And even fewer waded into the slaughter in person.
…
Does any of this make the events collectively known as “the Holocaust” any less real or less evil? Not at all.
Even if we discount the holocaust though. Completely removing it from the equation… And even without the cartoon villain “nazi” caricatures in pop media. Nazism is still an insane and dangerous ideology.
