Some people are blaming Kellyanne Conway because reporters started looking into things when her daughter reported that the entire Conway family was sick, but that’s basically blaming the parent of the messenger without proof.)

R-Selection and K-Selection are only weakly correlated to intelligence, and not particularly relevant for this argument regardless. Sphex wasps, for example, are K-selected, but most species are dumber than an earthworm.

Also octopuses are highly varied group, some species are social and some aren’t, some species are intelligent and some aren’t, some species lay may thousands of eggs and abandon them and some lay a small number and protect them. You’d have to show a strong correlation there just to prove this assertion with octopuses, never mind animals in general.

Addenum: If Trump survives, wins, and *then* dies before being sworn in January 20th, then Pence gets temporarily promoted to president, demoted and sworn in as vice-president on Jan 20th, then permanently re-promoted to president, because the rules are weird like that.

What happens if Trump dies is that the RNC puts up a new nominee. Anyone who has already voted for Trump still counts as a vote for Trump and not the new Republican nominee, and this late in the game, any hope that nominee has of getting the vote depends on a write-in campaign and/or faithless electors, because most of the ballots have already been printed and aren’t likely to be replaced.

If there’s no clear winner, or there’s an ungodly mess where the results can’t reasonably be considered legitimate, or Trump somehow wins despite having a bad case of the deads, then it’s up to the House of Representatives to pick who’s president. They don’t have to choose anyone actually running, and Pence only gets to be President until Jan 20th unless the House picks him for some strange reason. I strongly suspect Biden still wins in that case.

That’s assuming that the Supreme Court doesn’t meddle in the election like it did in 2000, which it probably will if Barrett gets rammed through before Trump dies. Then, who the hell knows, but it probably wouldn’t be good.

At this point Biden doesn’t even need to seem impressive, which he’s never been able to accomplish during any of his past presidential runs, anyway. He can easily afford to lose a few percentage points over the next month, so all he has to do is coast - and hope that other people are doing a halfway decent job of unfucking the vote. And he didn’t even lose anything from this - he gained about half a point overall, and a point or two in most of the places where it matters.

At least having a moderate conservative in charge would be a big step up from the past four ~~decades~~ years.

Some women spent their lives having this message hammered into their heads: “Your body is only for sex, you do not control how it will be used, and we will blame you for what others do with it anyway.” The idea of sex/nudity being used as a form of empowerment is a rebellion against that message: “My body is mine, I control how and when I express my sexuality, and I will show other women, so they can have the confidence to take power over themselves too!” Some people don’t get that, and some people are very concerned about the (likely counterproductive) message it sends to people who don’t get that, so it’s probably not a great thing in itself… but is stronger when there are also “better” (read: respectable, inoffensive, weak) messages of empowerment.

That’s not a good thing, as no one should be expendable. People demand improved quality of life.

Improved quality of life means a moderate increase in hedonism (and things unfairly tarred as hedonism) as well as open acceptance of some things which conservatives consider immoral. Because this is necessary for some people to have an improved quality of life.

Improved quality of life has a side effect of more childless people, and slightly fewer children per family, resulting in slower or even negative population growth. In addition, the combination of ready access to reproduction knowledge and reproductive control plus the promise (even if false) of being able to improve one’s life over time also tends to reduce the number of children even among people who have a poor quality of life to start with.

The slowing or reversing of population growth reduces a nation’s economic power relative to nations which aren’t going through that. Though I would point out that nations with a generally poor quality of life rarely have much economic power to begin with.

None of this is a conspiracy. It’s just humans being humans.

I’m guessing that the “sacrifice” in question is that their “way of life” (mostly really their bigotries) is/are under attack, and Trump appears to be taking a lot of the attacks in the form of constant media criticism. It feels safer to have a “strong” daddy figure looking out for people like them.

Of course, to quite a lot of other people, Trump is a narcissist and a bully whose only real strength comes from the office he’s elected to, and he doesn’t even wield that power effectively - scary and destructive as he is, it would be way worse if someone like Mitch McConnell were in his place instead. And he also generates most of the attacks he’s taking, so the “shield” he provides his followers is largely illusionary.
