Photo ID can be an extreme pain in the ass for some people to be able to get, because it’s made an extreme pain in the ass. Basically, some people have gotten worried about other people getting fake IDs establishing fake residency, so they try to make things more difficult to get. In Mississippi, if you’re 24 or older, you have to have two proofs of residency, which can be a bank statement or a bill with your name on it for each. If you have only one (or no) bank account, and no bills in your name, have fun getting an ID.
To make it more stupid, in Mississippi, absolutely any photo ID will work at a polling booth … including IDs that don’t have your address, and so have no connection to residency. Or even IDs long expired. Which, of course, completely defeats the purpose of having a photo ID, doesn’t it? Sure, we know who you are … but are you really living here?
Worse, some groups have presented the idea of having a special voter ID, which would be extremely careful about establishing proper residency. Which can take a little extra effort and investigation. And, well, a little more cost because of the effort.
