Off topic, but I wonder how they expect that kind of thing to work. A lot of right-wing freeze peach warriors crusade towards making public online spaces into “free speech zones”, and when that doesn’t work (and it almost never does), seek to create their own. It always ends up either being an echo chamber which is ironically heavily policed, or a sparsely-inhabited wasteland full of abusers, trolls, and fanatics with no one to hurt other than each other. As long as people have options, you don’t get to have a captive audience, and driving away most of the user base is bad for business.

One of the times I went to my doctor for a checkup, back in 2017 or 2018 or thereabouts, the phrase “people who have a cervix” came up. It’s an ongoing trend in medical circles to try to make things more friendly for people of all genders, though sometimes it’s well-meaning but doesn’t quite work or sounds dehumanizing to a lot of cishets. There’s no standard yet, and it’s a really delicate balance.

Regardless, sometimes internal anatomy or hormonal balance matters in medicine, so this is a (possibly less than ideal) shorthand way of establishing a presumed baseline for when it matters.

Same-sex marriage isn’t anywhere near the bottom of the slope, not unless you’re one of those really weird fundies who thinks same-sex relationships are morally little better than murder. Even if you’re one of those people who thinks all of the possibilities are equal, there’s still a “slope” in the sense that adoption of one could (theoretically) lead to the adoption of others. Typically, the slope looks more like this:

0. Only traditional marriage according to the dictates of my religion.
1. Secular marriage is allowed.
2. Mixed-race marriage is allowed.
3. Same-sex marriage is allowed.
4. Polyamorous marriage allowed, which is “bad” because it would allow a woman to marry two or more men. Or a small number of men might hog all the women, either way.
5. Incestuous marriage is allowed.
6. Pet and/or livestock marriage is allowed, and you know that some of them are going to be zoophiles.
7. Object marriage is allowed, rendering the whole concept meaningless.
8. Pedophiles manipulating children into marrying them is allowed, because ha ha what even the fuck matters anymore.

There’s some flexibility to the order of 6-8, as which of these seems most likely to happen first depends on one’s philosophical inclinations. Regardless, most conservatives want to dial things back to somewhere from 0-2, most liberals have long wanted to reach 3 or 4, 5 is a very much minority position, almost nobody wants 6-8, and the latter is not likely to ever change. There’s a real slope, but it doesn’t go all the way to the bottom.

Sad to say, a lot of gay and/or lesbian oriented communities have always been some mix of racist, transphobic, and/or biphobic, and occasionally even classist as well. Being an oppressed minority doesn’t prevent one from being a bigot.

This has been gradually changing. More transwomen are finding a place in lesbian spaces. More transmen are finding a place in gay spaces instead of lesbian ones. More nonwhites are finding places in either, and are no longer willing to put up with racists running the show. Bisexuals with lesbian or gay partners don’t want to have to pretend to a label which isn’t truly theirs to be accepted in their partner’s community.

As a result, the more bigoted members of such communities find their power waning, their friend circles shrinking, their legitimacy challenged. More inclusive communities are slowly growing and replacing them. They find themselves being in the very unenviable position of being looked down upon by nearly everyone, both other bigots who don’t share their particular minority status and most non-bigots.

The “obvious” solution is to divide, disrupt, and carve out slices of the larger LGBTQIA+ community where they can be queens and kings again. The non-obvious (to them) problem is that this is happening because most people have other, better options now, and aren’t going to stand for that.

It certainly might seem that way to someone who hasn’t been keeping up and sees decades worth of cultural shifts and activist work only after it’s already nearly complete, being aware of it only as new things suddenly coming out of nowhere, and older changes/work no longer being talked about as much.

A better way to describe it is “metastable”. Metastable things change over time, but usually only very slowly, maturing and adapting to new circumstances without changing their fundamental form or identity. And hey, guess what - Christianity is to some extent metastable too! Just because you won’t adapt doesn’t mean other Christians won’t. Just because secularism has more influence now doesn’t mean it’s changed that much.

The state legislatures can give their Electoral College votes to Trump

Technically, with a very broad interpretation of the powers of the states according to the Constitution, they might be able to do so. It would come before the Supreme Court to decide if that interpretation is reasonable, should it ever happen in real life.

In reality, all of the States have election laws. None of them in *any* State currently allow for this scenario. If the law(s) were changed after the votes were cast, or someone managed to overturn them, then it would only apply to the next election, not this one. This did not happen; no laws were changed. No state governments decided to openly violate their own election laws, which could result in a real mess if they did. Yes, team Legalo Trumpo tried to challenge the laws in the states Biden narrowly won, *after* the vote was cast, but they failed utterly, so it won’t even affect the next election, let alone this one.

Trump lost on every conceivable level. The Electoral College vote is now finished, and Biden is now truly, officially, the president-elect. Trump’s only remaining hope is a coup, and the various branches of the military already said they aren’t going to support that. I’d say “good luck, buddy”, but only in the most sarcastic manner possible.

I get the idea of needing to get rid of such people without murdering them. However, that’s our responsibility, and we shouldn’t dump that on other people. Out of all the US states and territories, Guam would be the among worst places to dump terrible people, from a moral perspective; unlike most of the others, people born there aren’t automatically US citizens, and the US government has very little to no effect on the daily life of people living there.

It’s probably a better approach to do as the body does: encyst them. An adult human has thousands of cancer cells at any time; the majority which aren’t dangerous enough to feel the full wrath of the immune system are instead trapped in microscopic cysts, not killing them but preventing them from spreading. How that would work is a real problem, though. Historically what it looks like is what we did to a lot of Native American tribes. And while there are occasional people who would like nothing better to inhabit militarized compounds in rural Idaho or eastern Oregon… forcefully relocating people to sub-optimal lands for being inconvenient, even being more gentle about it, might not be the best idea. I’m not sure what a better version would look like, unfortunately.

Now, to be fair, some people imagine a “real” pandemic to be a bit more dramatic. For example, if it involved some sort of highly visible pox-like or gangrene-like symptoms - pustules, papules, lesions, rashes, blisters, or necroticized skin, then no one would deny there was a pandemic. Instead we get 50% nothing significant happens, 40% just a bad flu with sometimes the odd side effect of temporarily losing your sense of taste, and 10% a bad flu where you also die of pneumonia. Any long term effects will barely register until later. Though if it were more visible we’d have a different issue than denialism, instead there would probably be a rise in murder levels, as if there was a low-key zombie apocalypse going on. Chalk it up to another case of entertainment media leaving some people with an unrealistic idea of how things usually work.

But at most, assuming the general argument is valid, that only suggests that “Ellen Page” the former identity (as the public knew it) is a separate (and partially fictional) entity from “Elliot Page” the actual person, not that transphobia or homophobia are in themselves valid.

Outside the major cities, there’s the common idea that people living in the big cities are all criminals or corrupt or at the very least have values alien to the “real Americans”, and thus cannot be trusted to vote “properly”, as the wise and worldly folk define and know the concept of “properly”.

The reality is horrendously complicated. The “wise and worldly” folk are often rather ignorant in areas outside their very narrow areas of expertise. Laws and regulations which such people believe would promote and empower family farms and small businesses usually do so in the short run, but in the long run serve as tools for big business to crush them underfoot and reap great profits in doing so. The laws and regulations which hobble big business in order to give others fair chance hurts small business as well, just to a lesser extent, but that looks and feels like oppression.

The unchained bigotry some would prefer gives insecurity to all for in exchange for the feeling of superiority for some, and mostly only exists at the level which it does due to the fact that fomenting bigotry can be very profitable. And while it very much feels like the rural/exurban (and sometimes suburban) areas are at the mercy of the distant, “ignorant” urbanites (and to be fair, a lot of urbanites don’t think much about things outside their own city) in some regions the reverse is more true (those who have never lived in a city have little concept of the realities said urbanites face).

There’s no good solutions at this point - only unsatisfactory compromises - and insuring a tyranny of a particular minority definitely won’t help.

I just checked out the commercial in question on Youtube. The Ritz crackers were featured prominently, and there was a whole “sharing things with family” thing going on, revolving around sharing crackers with stuff on them. “Absolutely nothing to do with selling crackers” isn’t even really right.

Most of the full-length version of the commercial is fairly mundane, but there’s a man, with a beard, dressed in a masculine manner… who puts on lipstick, and is seen again in the end (still wearing lipstick) hugging his friends as he greets them. That’s the whole “transgender agenda”. I’m pretty sure this is supposed to be gender-nonconforming-cis-representation, not trans representation. And of course there’s a part which mentions that family can be chosen rather than biological.

Yes, those alone would give fundies conniption fits, but this description is severely exaggerated.

I checked around. It appears that the only dictionary which mentions the term is the Oxford English Dictionary, and theirs is closer to the SJW version than the TERF version. Meanwhile the TERF version seems to be similar to what is more often referred to as “gender essentialism”, but has a particular TERFy twist to it.

The term also appears in incels.wiki, where it uses the concept to suggest that humans are mostly instinct-driven and trying to change people’s behavior is a waste of time.
