According to the NYT, Ms. Babbitt was a Q-Anon believer, anti-masker, and a danger to others considering her husband’s ex-girlfriend acquired two protective orders against her due to harassment and threats. On the 6th, she assisted other rioters with breaking down a glass door blocking access to the Speaker’s Lobby and was then hoisted through a window by two men so she could invade the building, and police shot her in the neck as she climbed through the window. Her death is tragic but ultimately due to her own actions.

But what about the policeman, Brian Sicknick, who was injured in the riot (I’ve heard but cannot substantiate that he was struck over the head by a fire extinguisher) and later died? What about Howard Liebengood, another police officer responding to the riot, who killed himself on the 9th? Do you care about their deaths in the service of their country?

My sense of right and wrong does not come from God. It comes from measuring harm against benefit, which of course is not always helpful in every circumstance. Utilitarianism can’t solve complex issues. But it gives me a good framework to work off of. For a random example, hunting for food is good, while hunting for sport is bad – if you’re going to cause pain and suffering to an animal, you might as well use its body. The emotional thrill you get out of hunting does not outweigh the cost to the animal. For another random example, theft is usually wrong. Taking someone’s property without exchanging something of roughly equal value is harmful. But if you were going to die or suffer harm without that property (food if you’re starving, medicine if you’re sick, clothes if you’re freezing), then the action becomes acceptable. Stealing from a big box store is less harmful and therefore less ‘wrong’ than stealing from a mom and pop store, because the big box store can take the hit a lot more effectively.

It’s okay to not want kids. It’s okay to have anxiety around kids and to be irritated by them if they’re loud or badly behaved. I have the same issue, although a lot of that is my own misophonia and severe anxiety, and not the fault of the children. But it is NOT okay to favor an animal over a person. As much as I love my pets, if a car was about to run over either a child or my dog, I’d rather they hit my dog. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself knowing I let someone else’s child come to harm.

I don’t feel the need to deal with the rest of the bullshit in OP’s post, but I do want to correct this misconception about Robin Williams’ suicide. His wife has spoken publicly and written at least one article about the cause of his death. He wasn’t merely ‘depressed’, he had a severe case of Lewy body dementia. His brain was basically dissolving and he had lost almost half of the neurons responsible for producing dopamine at the time of his death. He was experiencing terrifying bouts of anxiety, paranoia, confusion, memory loss, tremors, etc. He had a terminal degenerative illness and ended his own life. Saying his suicide was caused by depression is inaccurate and reductive.

Having watched the entirety of Steven Universe and SU: Future, I’m curious to find out what they think is fetishistic and immoral, minus the LGBT relationships/parenting. It’s a pretty optimistic show with multiple great morals, including: defusing tension through talking it out is a better tactic than violence, everybody deserves a second chance, love is a powerful force for good, etc. And SU: Future added my favorite lessons: it’s okay to stop giving people extra chances if they refuse to change, it’s okay to react negatively to trauma (getting angry/sad/having a tantrum), and it’s okay to admit you need help, even (and especially) mental help.

All of those are way better lessons than I picked up from the Bible.
