What would it matter? I mean, you’re changing the sexuality and gender but this post says nothing about it effecting personality. This OP is clearly saying that gender and sexuality are the only things that matter in a relationship. There’s nothing to make it relatable. Like the characters don’t go through the same judgement or ridicule as LGBT+ people, so saying Aurora is lesbian is relatable how? There’s no change to personality or what the character experiences so I don’t get this pretend thing to make her more relatable? They’re not hiding because they’re gay, she’s hiding because a witch wasn’t invited to a party, everyone else in the movie loves both the prince and the princess. This makes no sense!

This person is an SJW wanting to feel special or wanting to feel special but are afraid to admit they might like a straight pairing, because straight people are evil and it’s bad to like them. (Note to idiots reading this, I’m being sarcastic.)

I’m all for gay characters, maybe even trans, but they have to feel natural and genuine. These people like this OP are the reason why many don’t see LGBT+ as a natural thing. Also saying Aurora is relatable to this person AFTER a sexuality change, is kinda saying they’re not the sharpest tool in the shed. The issue I have is that everyone is entitled to their opinion, freedom of speech is freedom of speech. It doesn't go one way in the tolerance aspect. If you wish to be tolerated for your views, you must also tolerate views you don't agree with. Like him or not, boycotting him for disagreeing whether bigoted or just plain "I don't care for it" isn't being tolerant. Treat others as you want to be treated is a good standard to live by. Boycotting works by a man who doesn't agree with something thats a hot-button issue doesn't solve the problem, and it is detrimental to the cause they're trying to support. You may not like what he has to say, but he damn sure has the right to say it, just like you have the right to be contrary to the "accepted norm".

Martin Luther King had it right. He didn't go all aggro on people who hated on him, he took the higher road and accepted that there would always be people who didn't see or agree with his point of view.
In my humble opinion, tolerating assholes and not lowering yourself to arguing and hating on them for having a contrary point of view doesn't solve anything and only causes more strife and drama.
We'll never get over racism, sexism, homophobia and the like because there will always be people who just can't take it. I feel Mr. Card is conceding defeat on this issue and asking people to just let it go, which is classy even if he is a homophobe. He has said inflammatory things, but I've also heard people on the gay rights side of the fence say equally incendiary things against "breeders". There are bigots on both sides, and until we learn as a species to take to heart the free speech ideal that everyone is entitled to their opinion, the hate and debate will perpetuate.
The best way, in my view is to accept that there will be detractors to your viewpoint, there will be haters (haters gonna hate) and lashing out at them isn't going to make it better. Taking the stance of "I respect your right to have an opinion but I don't agree" is the only way we can move on from these childish tantrums. I understand that people on the LGBT side feel oppressed when someone speaks out against their lifestyle, but if they want to be accepted they in turn have to accept that not everyone will feel comfortable with it. When it goes beyond the opinion into the realm of straight up oppression, then there is a problem. But it must be handled with grace and civility.
Personally I believe what goes on behind closed doors is nobody's business but the people involved. I may not always agree with it, but I accept it is a "thing" and move on with life. I may from time to time say how I feel about it, and I have that right to express my feelings. But I also feel I must do so in a way that doesn't trash those I don't agree with. I expect the same respect from the people I don't agree with.

Here's a question.

A boycott against Card for allowing his personal beliefs to define himself as a public figure might be justifiable depending on which side of the argument you fall on.

But what about the other people who don't share Card's point of view that are involved in the film that could be hurt by the boycott? The actors. The producers. The special effects people.

This isn't just a film, it's also a livelihood for a bunch of people. Funny how it's NOT okay for someone to have a negative personal belief but it IS okay to collaterally harm ANYONE that might be associated with that person..

So yeah, I think tolerance is in order. After all, tolerance doesn't have to have conditions. Being tolerant means RESPECTING someone's opinion. Even if they weren't tolerant. You can't play fast and loose with the definition so that it suits your liking. You can't DEMAND tolerance and then turn around and be overtly INTOLERANT.

It really is that simple.

Edit: Another thought occurs to me. People overestimate the pro-gay equality lobby. More people could care less if Gays get married as it doesn't effect them. That doesn't mean they actually support homosexuality or even like gays, just that they don't support restricting them.

But you know what people support more? People's RIGHTS TO BELIEVE what ever they WANT.

I'll cite you one prominent and recent example: CHICK FIL-A. Remember how everyone was gonna boycott them because one guy in their corporation said he disagreed with gay marriage when asked point blank about it in an interview? Does anyone remember how that turned out?? In fact, didn't the reverse happen and they ended up with FAR more support than ever and the boycott suffered a public and humiliating defeat?

Yeah, the last thing I think anyone wants to do is turn this movie into a blockbuster smash hit not because the story and visuals were breathtaking cinema, but simply because butts got put in seats due to political controversy.

You are in the fortunate position where your rights are not subject to debate, political will and the vagaries of whether the voting public likes where the economy is going right now. You are in the fortunate position where somebody saying they hate your face and are going to make it illegal for you to walk around with a paper bag over your face will never actually be able to conceivably make it so.

People have a right to believe in what they choose to believe, and the government cannot prohibit parents to teach their own moral values to their children. I don't care whether homosexuality is acceptable or not--I have every right to teach my children moral behaviors that I believe in, whether or not other people agree with those ideals.
Does that mean children will be abused? No. People don't have to believe in the same things in order to love and care for another human being. They may disagree on homosexuality, or Christianity, or Hinduisim, but that does not outright mean that those parents will be cruel and abusive. They have a right to live their beliefs, and if they abuse their children in any way that goes against the law, THEN we can talk about disqualifications for being a parent.

Also, I've grown weary of the people who claim those who support the traditional family are on the wrong side of history comparing them to the civil rights movement. Civil rights was an issue which produced violent outbursts and tension. Whites shouted at and beat blacks who integrated their schools, restaurants, and public facilities. The recent Supreme Court case returning to California's Proposition 8 has shown those who support marriage between a man and a woman to be respectful but firm in what they believe in.

Only a man can impregnate a woman. It's biologically impossible for it to be any other way. Men and women also serve important complementary purposes in a family. Men reinforce discipline whereas women act as the caretakers of young children teaching them important lessons into adolescence and adulthood.

Being an Eagle Scout myself, I will vouch for the BSA. They are an organization that does their part to influence the lives of young males in a constructive manner and to teach them moral and ethical values that they will take with them to the rest of their lives. Holding true to their moral convictions and shielding them from the influence of homosexuality is part of that. They are a private organization heavily influenced by the teachings of Christianity, and they have the right to act however they please. You may not like it, you may think it's hatred and bigotry, but the fact of the matter is they have been at this for WAY longer than you have, and I think the results speak for themselves.

As Inflexus above has pointed out, there' an actual reason behind this prohibition. It's for the protection of the Scouts themselves against sexual predators. When we go out on our campings we are out there for several days or even weeks, away from the protection society at large provides, with the organization & its leaders being pretty much the only source of protection we have. If there is one among their ranks who secretly has sexual wantings for the young males, who else is going to stop him? They're out in the middle of the woods, far away from the rest of civilization, and they are at greater risk there. This is a safety measure put in place to prevent that scenario from happening, and it swings both ways; adult heterosexual males wanting a position in the leadership must pass training in protection as well as personal screening. I will admit upon reflection that it is a bit of a generalization, but the reasons are well-intentioned.

The character’s creator, Marc Brown, has been writing children’s books for his entire life and still works on the show. He’s from Massachusetts and isn’t Jewish.

Since he still participates in the making of these cartoons, I can only assume that he’s recently been infected with The Gay.

On some level, I think I get what the author is doing here. And he should be commended for his public service. He’s sending the people a warning.

Arthur is a third-grader, and given the fact that most homosexuals prey on children, we’re surely not supposed to believe that Mr. Ratburn never tried to fiddle his aardvark pecker.

This revelation certainly makes the cover of “Arthur’s Teacher Trouble” look ominous.

Someone needed to point out that a lot of these teachers working at schools now are homosexuals, closeted or otherwise. And these kids need to know that they’re in a complete and total danger zone when they enter school, and not just from the n-words and the lying hos and the school shooters.

There is no money, no prestige and no sense of cultural duty associated with becoming a teacher anymore. Only dumb women and gay men do it now. Gone are the days of the well-learned and respected schoolteacher who would put dunces in the corner where they belonged, and who would beat the girls with a switch for gossiping.

Even the well-meaning college kids don’t do it anymore. They try Teach For America for a couple of semesters and drop out of the program out of frustration because they just can’t deal with uppity n-words all the time.

The only people left are the kind who like having unfettered access to children.

I’m glad that the good folks at PBS are taking it upon themselves to teach children these valuable life lessons and to keep a wary eye on the pedo at the head of the class, scribbling away on the blackboard.

'll put this as best as I can. I'm an odd man out in the FF community. I don't like canon characters in the first place, but I feel like if you are gonna do them you do them as close to canon as possible. I can't stand outside random shipping.

So when it comes to this I feel it's basically the number one F U to the character. Most often it's done to fulfill some sort of ship and not because it actually adds to the character or makes a good character.

To a degree, I get what's going on here. I for one grew up on the original PJO books. Never had anything about Nico's sexuality so when I wrote him he was straight and that character was MY character that's what he meant to and was to me. The second series not only felt like a betrayal to the original series (seriously so many retcons and plot holes) that whether it was intended or not in the first series I saw the Nico story as a retcon.

Same time I'm also a catholic and honestly I don't support the whole LGBT idea (It's not like I'm out there stopping anyone. I can disagree. If you're gonna do something in your home I can't stop you, but I also have the right to keep it out of my life.) So if I find a character I like and they turn out to be in that category yes I have ignored it or changed it. Partially because if I portray it as wrong I'd get even more flack.

There was a time when I genuinely sat down and thought about whether or not I supported these ideas and in the end, I don't see them as positive or useful in any way, so they are either negative or not important. I'm certainly not going to support them then in my work. At best I see it as a mental disability where the body has reactions to the same gender instead of the opposite. It's not a crippling disorder, but it just sounds like a disorder to me. (You can be happy while having a disorder. Plenty of people here are on the autism spectrum or adhd or plenty of other challenges, but they aren't things to parade around like they are distinctly good. At best they are not bad.)

TL:DR I don't support the LGBT, so I make everyone straight, but typically avoid canon characters so I've only done it twice. Deal with it. My right to disagree is just as strong as yours. I'm not stopping you from doing anything, so you can't stop me.

im sorry about being a bitch lately about the whole pride thing. People who have known me on my blog and DA page know I’m a huge anti yaoi and yuri person. I’ll be short about it , I think it’s ignorant for acting like you know better than the authors and creators, being I am a writer and would hate it for my own characters. The most annoying and number one thing is that it’s shoved in my face, especially this month and the Winx fandom is worst when it comes to this. “Headcannons never hurt anyone…” True but when it’s f@$^ing shoved in my face whenever I search my favorite show and people act bitchy, acting like everyone agrees with them, it’s like you might as well be hitting me over the head with it! So naturally if people going to keep shoving it in my face, it’s only natural I wanna shove my hatred of it just as far. Also, if LGBT is supposedly equal to straight folks, why do you need an entire month to celebrate who date/have it with? It seems more like Pride Month is propaganda than it is about equality, like Autism awareness. All of a sudden people care about that for just one month? Bull dust! Note when you comment calling me “white cis male”, I’m grey-asexual, Japanese Native American decent, am a woman and autistic. I choose to not parade about it because that’s not what equality is you idiots. I look forward to your comments!

Actually, if you think about it, there is a lot of hypocrisy yaoi fandom, as the characters they subject their fetishes to are usually STRAIGHT, NOT GAY! SUCH FORCED PAIRINGS ARE AKIN TO RAPE! Also, the fandom is also highly mysoginistic (by bashing any females who are in the story, KH and GW yaoi fandoms being major culprits of this). So a yaoi fangirl/fanboy accusing us non-yaoi fans of being anti-gay, close-minded, homophobe (and any other crap)is like a POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK! For one thing, when I picture a straight guy being uncomfortable around gay men, I wouldn't think he was homophobic. I would think he was a guy. Most striaght men don't like the idea of being gay, or have others thinking that they're gay. It's normal to feel that way, and there's nothing wrong with it. Being uncomfortable does not equal homophobic.

When you said that it made you stomach turn, that doesn't mean you're homophobic. It just means you're straight. I don't think you should be ashamed for feeling that way. If you got turned on when thinking about to people of the same sex together; it may mean you might have gay tendecies, especially if you got all hot and bothered thinking about yuri, but you don't. It's your biology talking, and just because your biology isn't the same as some one who is gay doesn't make you a bad person. Just like being gay doesn't make them a bad person.

You'd be homophobic if you hated someone just because they were gay, without even knowing them. You'd hate anything that would be associated with homosexuality. But you don't. You have friends who are gay. It's like watching your friend eat pickels with mayo and peanut butter. The thought of eating that may make your stomach churn, but does that mean you dislike your friend any less for eating it? No.

So don't worry about it. You're normal.

Are Yaoi-Haters homophobic?
This isn't flame bait; it's an essay.

I've been adamantly anti-yaoi for a long time now. When I started off getting into various fandoms, I honestly didn't care much about the yaoi aspects and just ignored or went along with it. But over time for various reasons, I grew to dislike it, and eventually became flat-out disgusted by it.

And it bothers me, because as much as I hate yaoi, I am very much supportive of gay rights. I have many gay friends who I care about, and I believe that they deserve the equal rights in marriage, adoption, and everything else as much as any straight couple gets. Yet the idea of two men having a sexual relationship, even just KISSING, makes my stomach churn.

The hell is wrong with me? I'm a straight female and an atheist with no moral influences against it. And it's only yaoi too; I'm utterly neutral to yuri and lesbian relationships. It doesn't disgust me, but it doesn't turn me on either.

It makes me wonder about something that worries me. If I support gay rights but am disgusted by the idea of gay relationships, am I actually homophobic and thus a hypocrite?

Right now I'm active in an online role play community (based on Final Fantasy VII) where the majority of the members are gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that... but it often becomes frustrating. I love the community, but as one who hates Yaoi, when stuff I don't like appears before me I have to pretty much look the other way or grit my teeth and bare it. Every once in a while someone sends me a picture or a RP log that makes me want to puke a little. I really wish I could say "You know, I really don't wait to see this..." but I'm afraid of the backlash and accusations I'll get.

One of the leaders of the community is a gay man who is extremely sexist against women. He likes to talk trash about them behind their backs and exclude them from things. I'm one of the people subject to this, and every time he does an assholeish thing to me, everyone tells me that it's not because of something I did, it's because I'm female. He acts the same way towards the lesbians in the community, too. Everyone in the community allows it and no one really considers it a bad thing, just this guy's "quirk".

Really, prejudice against women by gay men being accepted by a community that preaches equality wasn't something I ever imagined before. I guess there are all kinds of people in this world.

The gay rights movement is a strange thing. Even though the main drive is love, equality, and peace, there's this hidden aspect of counter-bigotry that sometimes shows up. I think it's most obvious through all the hatred put out by rabid yaoi fans over shallow things like anime pairings and smutty drawings, but there's more to it than that. When a group of persecuted individuals gets big enough, they become quick to defend themselves by attacking back.

I'm trying to be very careful about what I say here because I don't want people to get the wrong idea. It's like walking on eggshells, really. I can't really understand my reason for being disgusted by yaoi, because I'm a woman and I'm non-religious. When you consider a straight man who's uncomfortable around a gay man, what pops into your head? You usually think of the straight man as being a closed-minded, dangerous homophobic religious bigot, or some kind of goofball flailing around comically while trying to affirm his masculinity. When you think of a straight woman uncomfortable around a gay man, you usually think of a homophobic religious mother worried that the gay man will touch her children or spread teh ghey to them. Oh, and gay men and lesbians just have a fabulous time with each other with no problems whatsoever.

But those are all stereotypes and real life does not work that way.
