You're right. Materialism IS the null hypothesis. And yet I know in my heart that its explanatory power is limited unless you want to write off all value, preference, feeling and meaning as “illusion,” which amounts to gaslighting.
What if the reverse is true? The only real thing is actually irrationality, and all the rational materialism is simply a catalyst for experiencing things?

I’ve noticed this when visiting parts of the south that paid a direct toll for the war, the confederate iconography tends to be more open and more part of the culture. You can try to shame them all you want from a modern perspective of presentism, but you’re not going to win any hearts and minds if you ignore the fact that their culture took root back when there were still people around who had their farms burned, their daughters raped and their sons murdered. A decade of harsh winters starving in Shenandoah or Savannah, experienced first hand, is going to shape the post-war culture and if you try to engage with people from those cultures without acknowledging that, then you’re doing it more for your own sense of self-superiority than you are for any real attempt to find common ground or change people’s minds. That very real, very human pain tends to supersede a the more distant morality of overall conflict.
That plus when you strip away the fact that now people understand that slavery and racism are fucking wrong, the Civil war becomes a narrative of rural life versus urban imperialism. When in the Public, you have to be prepared to act as they expect. To me that means identify yourself if required. In most cases it is not required, and you cannot be made to, but you could then end up in jail for 72 hours until they identify you. They tried that on a Native woman here and jailed her as a “Jane Doe”, and while she was in jail they went through her stuff and found a drivers license and took it to her and said: Is this you? Exactly. Gender ideology isn’t a “single issue” because it is actually about whether or not we recognize reality and truth. I will probably vote for Harris, because the Republicans also refuse to recognize reality on certain issues (particularly the environment), but I am tired of gender ideology being treated in such a dismissive reductive way on this site, of all places, and being shamed, as a woman, by other women, for thinking it is much bigger than that.

Seriously. The few people who know my entire terfy stance still don't understand my political dilemma (I'm in Canada, but will be facing a similar choice soonish). If I mention something about how it's going to be impossible to know what to do, they look at me like I'm completely crazy, like trans-ideology is a super niche and somewhat silly thing to factor in. Then I say something emotional about the rights of an entire half of the population, or compelled speech, or acknowledging the simple truth... then I tear up and my lack of sanity is confirmed for the other person. I sometimes wonder if this dogged belief that genitals don't matter (beyond just functioning to "affirm") stems from some men's (mainly TIM's) sexuality in which the artificial presentation of gender is what is attractive, not necessarily the sex of the person. This isn't to say that heterosexual TIMs aren't attracted to women, but I'm more so considering the bisexual (or pseudo-bisexual, depending on who you ask) TIMs. This may not make any sense, but I'm curious if anyone's got any thoughts on this, even if it's to say I'm full of shit.

I believe you're describing performative femininity. It's why some hetero males are okay with sexual relationships with TIMs because "it looks like a woman". They aren't exclusively attracted to the female body, they're attracted to the patriarchal idea of what a woman should look like. I imagine they also have no issues wearing knock off designer clothes and fake jewelry. If it looks real enough, then it's good enough.

I don't know if you can even really consider those men heterosexual if they're with a TIM (given that the vast majority of TIMs retain their male genitalia/don't mutilate themselves... and also because they are men immutably due to their chromosomal makeup). I think it's a natural consequence of gender ideology being massively spread to teenagers.
Gender ideology is equivalent to how conservatives told women that they should stick to gender roles. A woman is dumb, submissive, with few hobbies. If you like maths, climbing to trees or prefer legos to dolls, then you're a man. In comparison, being a man looks like much more fun.
Being a woman sucks so much in this ideology. Of course young women who believe in it will start identifying as anything else.
A few years ago they would have been called tomboys and could live their life, today they risk being pushed down a lifelong medical pipeline including a double mastectomy before their majority.
Non binary people are those who realize that they don't fit the stereotypes, but who did not reject gender ideology and try to adapt it to their personality somehow by creating additional genders (instead of recognizing that almost no one fits stereotypes and gender doesn't exist).

Sometimes I see TiMs posting with some actual self-awareness of how ridiculous the whole attempt to trans is, and they give up because they realize they will never look like a tiny feminine girl. If they are lucky they will stop the hormones and stop the pretending and realize they are men.
